Vogue China -- 5th Anniversary

A special contribution for the fifth anniversary of Vogue China. A celebration of Chinese design with 30 unique creations by 30 Chinese designers

For their fifth anniversary, Vogue China asked thirty Chinese designers to create a special piece infused with Chinese inspiration. Red, black and white - three seemingly simple colours, yet full of countless complex possibilities. Added to this, was the designer's own interpretation and take on what they thought 'traditional Chinese elements' ought to be.

Being for Vogue China's 5th Anniversary publication, this piece required a lot of attention. From design to dying the fabric and embroidery, the whole process of creating this red cocktail dress took over a month.

I still remember taking the call from Vogue where they asked me to specially design them a cocktail dress infused with Chinese inspiration. As everybody knows, my designs rarely utilise Chinese embroidery or any other type of traditional Chinese elements but after careful consideration, I decided to give it a go.

I chose a layer of chiffon to drape over the bodice decorated with traditional Chinese embroidery. This way, the dress would maintain a good balance between realness and a certain whimsicality.

-----------------------

At my request, the top student of the master qipao creator, Yang Chengui spent two weeks hand-crafting a button embroidered with the image of a phoenix raising its head. Unfortunately, the dress was shot from a distance, so this design element can't be seen clearly - which is a great shame...

Are you "IN"style?

When I was in America, I was a regular reader of INstyle magazine. As a publication which focuses on the fashion and style of leading Hollywood actresses, it was a useful point of reference to me in my work. Back in China however, I seem to read it much less.

This month however, INstyle China celebrated its two year anniversary and has produced an 8 page feature on 'New Stars'. Enjoy!

This Summer, Lu Liu as a pioneering Chinese fashion designer, who is also a green thinker, she came out with her new collection <Lumiere d'Espoir>, which is inspired from the lifestyle of Parisian by using new invented fabric from the recycle material of abandoned cars, which is sponsored by Citroen Cars.

According to Lu Liu ----"Besides the traditional fabric, as a fashion designer, I am trying to use re-cycle material. I always take the used or worn out or waste material from different industry, and re-invented the material to a whole new fabrics, so I can use them into my collection, transform the waste to something valuable. At this point, fashion truly becomes the tool to be used in recycle system, and makes the earth a better place to live."
